The Times Tip Number 5: Daily fasting

Depending on who you talk to, the benefits of detox, fasting and chewing are polarising. However, the experts in Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and naturopathy will tell you that if it is something you want to do, the best time for a health kick is April/May with its abundance of naturally cleansing produce. Sure you can buy this stuff any time of year but it’s now in season so at its nutritional peak plus with the longer, lighter sunnier days, we are at our motivational peak, with more energy and enthusiasm for a health-kick.⠀

It’s also worth noting that daily fasting is really good for the gut. I’ve adopted the 16:8 plan and it works for me – eating within an 8-hour time frame and fasting for the remaining 16 hours, great for giving the gut a good break. I eat early evening (7pm latest when possible), and don’t have breakfast til late morning. Thus, for a lot of the fast I am fast asleep. ⠀
The fasting experts are all champions of chewing too – 30 times as this produces more saliva which contains digestive enzymes that make food easier to digest. Plus you feel fuller and satisfied, faster.
